We’re Living in a Simulation says Elon Musk

Elon Musk say’s He’s certain that we’re living in Computer Simulation.

For a few of you who live under a rock and don’t know this great man. Here’s a 30 second pitch.

Elon Reeve Musk (Born June 28, 1971) is a South African-born American Business Magnate, Investor, Engineer, and Inventor. He is the founder, CEO, and CTO of SpaceX; a co-founder, Series A investor, CEO, and product architect of Tesla Inc.; co-chairman of OpenAI; founder and CEO of Neuralink, and founder of The Boring Company (2016). Musk is also a co-founder and former chairman of SolarCity, co-founder of Zip2, and founder of X.com, which merged with Confinity and took the name PayPal.

We can literally remove the word “Risk” from the dictionary and replace it with “Elon Musk”.

Need any more reasons?

There’s a one in billion chance that this is reality. ~Elon Musk

Elon says that Humans are like an advanced version of the popular TV series The Simpsons.

I know that sounds like an absurd idea to most people (actually it sounds absurd to everyone except Elon Musk, Nick Bostrom and Me 🤪).

Hey, we can’t just say this is an absurd idea without looking at all the possibilities, we’re techies we believe in technology, its capabilities and possibilities. Also people used to think the earth is flat and every other celestial body revolved around the earth, even the sun. Sounds stupid to believe this at this moment in time?
People we’re surprised when Galileo proved otherwise, but 2000 years before Galileo, Aristarchus of Samos described the solar system similarly (The same crazy idea).

According to all this the currently reality isn’t real.

Musk is echoing a paper on this theory “Are You Living in a Computer Simulation” by Nick Bostrom.

Musk argues that about 40 years ago we had pong, two rectangles and a dot, 30 years later after pong we got The Simpsons.

Now 40 years later we have almost true to life 3D simulation (Musk is referring to 3D Multiplayer games like -Dota 2) that millions of people play simultaneously, and it’s only getting better every year.

Let’s take a trip down the time tunnel to the future and see what it’ll be like on earth.

It’s possible that civilization decides to be greedy and ignore every noticeable change in the climate and we are entirely gone. Our extinction could also be because we’ve hit the ceiling of Innovation and Advancements or maybe self replicating robots decide to kill the human race.

Elon says that the only reason civilizations would stop advancing would be because due to some changes in the climatic, an event occur that erases humanity.

Another possibility can be that we keep advancing, and assuming we can simulate everything in the physical world, we’ll eventually simulate our self.

Every synapse of the Human brain for everyone on earth. That’s a lot of Data.

Running Billion of Ancestor simulations could be a problem, because of the computation power needed.

Nick Bostrom thinks we could send tiny self replicating robots to other planets, other parts of the galaxy and even other universes (If they exist), which would turn those planets into huge computers and some of those simulations can start making their own simulations. In this scenario, there will be billions of universes that are indistinguishable from our universe. That means there a high possibility that we’re in one of the simulated universes.

Also given the possibility that Human civilization has an inevitable ceiling. Elon Musk thinks, we better hope we’re in a simulation.

Either we are going to create simulations that will be indistinguishable from reality or civilization will cease to exist. Those are the two options. ~Elon Musk

We can argue against Musk’s statement that there is one more possibility, maybe the future humans just don’t want to run ancestor simulations.

They might think of it as unethical, or maybe they don’t want anyone to experience the tremendous amount of suffering in the world. The suffering would be real for even a stimulation, if it’s human or maybe they have other priorities and they will do it.

To recap this, there are three possibilities:

  • We aren’t able to run a simulation this big before our extinction
  • The future humans just find running simulations wrong, boring or inhumane.
  • We are in a simulation.

Elon thinks there’s a very slight (almost zero) chance that scenario one or two is true.

Nick Bostrom, the philosopher, thinks it’s more like a 20% chance that we’re in a simulation.

But if you don’t count yourself in people who believe in futuristic predications, Bostrom thinks that the argument provides other rewards.

He says “It suggests naturalistic analogies to certain traditional religious conceptions.”

To place Bostrom’s words in similar sense, if we’re living in a simulation there is a higher level-being (God) but it’s some version of us.

This statement, if true opens a ton of conversations, which is why Elon Musk put down some rules about when he can talk about this.

It got to the point where every conversation was the AI simulation conversation and my brother and I finally agreed that we would ban such conversations if we were ever in a hot tub. ~Elon Musk

I got the idea for this article from Vox’s video, do check it out.
